Traditional American ice cream recipes do not use an egg-based custard like European ice cream recipes do. This simple combination of cream, sugar and vanilla produces a delicious treat that's a throwback to ice cream recipes of day's gone bye.

Makes 8 Servings of Philadelphia-Style Vanilla Ice Cream
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Ingredients:
  • 1 quart half-and-half
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Preparation:
Add the half-and-half, cream, sugar to a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Heat over low flame, stirring, until the sugar is dissolved, and the mixture is hot, but NOT simmering (about 170 degrees F). Remove from heat, and add the vanilla.

Allow to cool, and chill overnight in the fridge. Pour into your ice cream maker, and process according to directions.
