The term "French dressing" was originally used to describe a simple oil and vinegar salad dressing recipe. Today, American cooks know French dressing as a tangy, sweet, tomato-based mixture, perfect for dressing salads, dipping vegetables, or even as a sandwich spread.

Makes about 3 Cups French Salad Dressing

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 5 minutes


  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup red wine vinegar
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt


Add all dressing ingredients to a blender, and process until very smooth. Store refrigerated in an airtight container.
