Kansas City barbecue sauce is probably America's most popular barbecue sauce recipe. Rich, dark, thick, sweet, and tangy, this barbecue sauce recipe is great on everything from smoked beef brisket, to the classic rack of pork ribs.

Makes about 3 Cups

Prep Time: 05 minutes

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 2/3 cup dark molasses
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/2 tsp ground mace
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp Tabasco
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp liquid smoke, optional

Preparation:

Whisk together all ingredients in a saucepan and simmer, stirring, on low heat for 15 minutes. Let cool to room temperature. May be used as a basting sauce towards the end of cooking, or brushed on after barbecuing, with additional sauce served on the side.
