Caramelized onions are one of the most popular, and delicious, toppings for steaks and burgers. This caramelized onions recipe uses both red and yellow onions for a sweet and savory garnish, great for any grilled or roasted meats.

Makes about 1 1/2 Cups Caramelized Onions

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 large yellow onions, peeled, sliced thin
  • 2 large red onions, peeled, sliced thin
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste

Preparation:

In a large heavy-bottom skillet or pot, melt the butter in the olive oil over medium heat. When the butter is melted, add the sliced onions, and 1/2 tsp of salt. Reduce heat to medium-low, and cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for about 30 minutes, or until the onions are soft, sweet, and golden brown. Remove from heat and adjust seasoning with salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste.

Tip: after cooking the excess oil and butter can be drained for a lower calorie version
